Volunteering – Doing things for ‘love rather than money'?

The Royal Society of Arts for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce – to give it its full title, is key to the history of the gift and its role in the British economy. Learned societies continue today to bring people and organisations together to share knowledge. This in-person event is an opportunity to join in the discussion being held to celebrate the Year of The Gift.

Lewis Hyde in his book The Gift: How the Creative Spirit Transforms the World, argues that gift exchange described by Marcel Mauss, also applies to vocations and creativity. As Fellows or RDI are you motivated to be involved with the RSA, to exchange knowledge for the betterment of the wider society? Is networking - a gift exchange process? Do we expect people to give, volunteer, share their expertise, without realising we may have an obligation to make a return gesture? How many of our institutions would collapse without gifts of all kinds – not just cold cash?

This is an opportunity to join in the discussion being held this year to celebrate the Year of 'The Gift. If you are not a Fellow, please feel free to come along as a guest and learn more about the RSA too.
